HELB To Begin Disbursements For Kenya Medical Training Collage Students, And Clearing Of Pending Batches

DP Kindiki announces plans for KMTC HELB disbursements

Nairobi ,

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) will begin disbursing funds to students of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) starting Monday, 8 December 2025, following a directive by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki who presided over the college’s graduation ceremony on Thursday, 4 December. The decision marks a major shift in state policy, potentially easing the financial burden on thousands of health-sector trainees.

Background:

During the 94th KMTC graduation ceremony held at Kasarani Stadium,  Deputy president Prof Kindiki revealed that KMTC students have long been excluded from HELB support  a privilege previously reserved largely for university and TVET students. He vowed to convene an inter-ministerial meeting involving the ministries of Health, Education, and Treasury to finalise a funding formula to integrate KMTC trainees into HELB’s loan programme.

The Deputy President emphasized that many KMTC students face significant financial pressures, and that extending HELB support would ensure no qualified trainee is locked out of medical training for lack of funds.

This move coincides with broader Kenyan government efforts to strengthen health training institutions: this year alone, the administration has committed KSh 9.7 billion to support staff recruitment, infrastructure expansion, and student welfare at KMTC.

HELB disbursements reports

Even before the formal roll-out for KMTC students, HELB had already disbursed several batches to ongoing  university and TVET students. According to OUR updates, the following batches covering upkeep and tuition have been paid as of Friday 5th December :

HELB Batch 6482 — paid. UPKEEP

HELB Batch 6439 — earlier paid. UPKEEP

HELB Batch 6464 — paid. UPKEEP

HELB Batch 6463 — paid (via M-PESA option).

Students are advised to wait patiently for a surepay message that will confirm they have received payments and thereafter access their funds via *642#

In addition, Tuition HELB batch 6493 — was released and students are advised to check with the students finance office within 72 hours.

These disbursements mainly target students already in the system, helping cover upkeep and tuition costs.

What’s Next: HELB for KMTC

Under Prof Kindiki’s directive, HELB will from 8 December 2025 begin to disburse funds to eligible KMTC students a watershed moment for many in medical training.

Officials said a meeting will be convened early next week involving the Cabinet Secretaries for Health, Treasury, and Education to finalise modalities and draw up a funding formula. The expectation is that the new arrangement will align KMTC students with the same financing privileges extended to university and TVET students under HELB.

The policy change is expected to dramatically relieve the financial burden on parents and trainees, ensuring that no aspiring health professional is left behind due to lack of funds a move welcomed by many as timely, especially amidst the rising cost of living.

 Reaction and Implications

The announcement has been broadly welcomed by students and parents, who have long lamented the exclusion of KMTC trainees from HELB support. The expansion of HELB eligibility to cover KMTC students signals a growing recognition of the importance of health-sector training in national development.

For HELB, the inclusion of KMTC students may increase loan volumes significantly. For the government, it means investing more in the health workforce pipeline at a time when the country is working to expand universal health coverage and strengthen primary health care staffing.

As of now, the confirmed paid batches (6439, 6463, 6464, 6482, and 6493) provide some reassurance that HELB’s disbursement machinery is working. The roll-out to KMTC students will be watched closely  both by beneficiaries eager for support and by policymakers assessing the cost and logistics of the expanded coverage.

What Students Should Do

Students enrolled at KMTC should wait for an official communication from HELB or their campus administration informing them when and how disbursement will happen.

Those currently in existing HELB batches  including upkeep and tuition should verify their payment status (especially for batches 6439, 6463, 6464, 6482, and 6493).

Parents and prospective students should monitor announcements from HELB and KMTC for finalized guidelines on eligibility and application procedures under the new scheme.
